Why should authors spend time traveling, getting physically ready, preparing thoughts for a discussion and bringing the necessary items for a book signing. It is certainly not only to sell a dozen or even a couple dozen books. A book signing has always been a prestigious activity. They bring a certain validity to the author and the book. They create excitement in the book store, provides readers, followers and fans an opportunity to ask questions, gather more information about the author and book and purchase a signed edition. So how does the author benefit beyond few sales of a new book? Exposure, exposure, exposure. We all know that an Oprah appearance is every author's goal. But, how does that happen and can it over night. The answer is yes it can happen, but not overnight. An author needs to build word of mouth recognition, and that happens by exposure. And contacts. When you are out there you are meeting people, discussing books and shaking hands - This is your audience, this is word of mouth.
Dr Molly Barrow just recently had a book signing at Barnes and Noble. There were posters plastered all over the store advertising the upcoming event. A press release advertised the signing prior to the day and even a television station came to the event and Dr. Barrow appeared on the nightly news. This is all great exposure, and from just one book signing.
