How Important is the Cover, Back Cover and Spine of a New Book

How important is the cover and back cover? Very!
As a prospective buyer scans the cover and reads the back cover of your book you have 21 seconds to grab their attention and convince them that they must have your book. With the huge number of titles represented at your neighborhood Barnes and Noble or independent bookseller, you better do your cover and back cover right. And please do not disregard the spine. The spine may be your first impression. The average length a prospect will examine your cover is just 6 seconds, enough time to pique their interest and if designed correctly, enough time to know exactly what your book is about. Curious about the book, they turn it over to read the back. Here is where many authors and book designers fail to present their book in its best light. Many make the mistake of writing an endless stream of text that neither captures the prospects attention or is just too long and tedious. The back should have a brief synopsis, endorsements and bulleted points. A picture of the author is fine, but they main job of the back cover is to inform the prospect what the book is about, what other people say about the book and a few key talking points to close the deal.
