When Should an Author Quit Doing Free Things to Generate Book Sales?

The answer...Never. That's the simple answer because there will always be free appearances that you will do. What you must do is to be able to discern which free appearances you can do without. How do you do that? One good way is to weigh the cost of the appearance with book sales. If experience tells you, and you have done enough of these appearances, and transportation costs more than the book sales you will garner, then forget those. Like a shark, keep moving forward. When you have found yourself stagnating, move on. Also appearances can pigeon hole you. Be sure to remain flexible, if you have appeared on the same program 10 times, and it is comfortable, it probably is time to branch out and use those 10 appearances as a stepping stone. Its always a balance. Is the cost of the appearance worth it. You may view the appearance as a stepping stone, to either acquire a good tape to send off for bigger shows, or to add to your web site, or other media appearances. The sales may not be that important. Sometimes the exposure is enough. Is the appearance always the best use of your time? If not, you could be wasting valuable time and opportunities. Appearances are great for many reasons. They provide recognition and are the best sales tool you will find. Does JK Rowling need to do any appearances...No, of course not. But JK Rowling and Dan Brown are the less than 1% who dont.

How to Make Your Books Work for You

All first time authors, and really most authors need to follow a few rules of marketing. Whether you hire a marketing company or plan on doing your own marketing, one very important strategy is to let your book work for you. There are many ways to do this, and you must be prepared to give away a large sum of books, at least 50 to start with. To make the books work for you, you need to be smart handing them out. Give them to people who will take the books further, people that can extend the reach of the books to a wider market. They could be librarians, media representatives and personalities, book store owners, reviewers and many more. With the genre of your books considered, carefully distinguish how to best use your books. To promote the books by giving away copies or offering books as prizes for competitions or games is a great way to get the word out. Word of mouth is a superb way to market, and it must start somewhere. Giving away copies of your book is a a quick and actually expected method of promotion. It really is a cost effective when you consider the value of each book and its possible range. In the right hands a free book can create a priceless marketing strategy.

Two Barringer Publishing Books Donated to Kenyan Orphanage

We are proud to be the first publishing company to donate two children's books to the Vihiga Children's Home in Vihiga, Kenya. Now over 200 books fill the shelves at the orphanage. The first two books were both by Dr. Molly Barrow and are of the Malia and Teacup series of adventure books. both of these books take part at least partially in Kenya. The children at the school were delighted to receive the books, especially because they were written about their own country, and how a little girl from Illinois ends up in Africa, escaping one misadventure after another. The library was the idea of Lillian Tuttle, a Fulbright Scholar from Versailles, Kentucky, who just spent three months with the children, helping to prepare them for their high school entrance exam. The home for the children is sponsored by the the wonderful dedication of the Thomas Jefferson Unitarian Church of Louisville, Kentucky. Lillian, along with the other young adults who came to Kenya also worked with the younger children, took field trips to museums and safaris, and also celebrated the orphanages first Halloween. She hopes the library will grow and the children will have many more books to select from throughout the coming years. The children are in need of sponsorships. Over a 4 year high school period they will need $3,000 to sponsor their education. Many people donate to the church mentioned above to help these wonderful kids receive their education.

Why Do People Write Books Anyway

Why do they? It is an interesting question, and one I put to my authors. Why did you just spend four years of your life, at the computer, isolated from family and friends to put 100,000 words on paper in a logical manner and sign your name to it? Do you believe you have something important to say? Did you just have a bunch of time and tired of reality shows on television? Is it an ego boost...Hey, I am a published author, look at me? Is it a credibility issue for one's profession or speaking engagements? What I have found is yes, all of the above are reasons people write books, and there are more. How about fame and fortune? Of course the odds are astronomical but I think every writer believes he or she is the next Dan Brown, Stephen King or JK Rowling. The truth is someone has to be, so why not them. Every reason mentioned above is a legitimate reason to pen a book. Everyone does have a story and something to say. We know this from casual conversation with friends, neighbors and even strangers. Will it sell and make millions, or even thousands? Everyone knows the odds are not in their favor, but the act of writing is an honorable chore and passion. And that is the key, enjoy it. Write for the sheer pleasure of telling a story or trying to help, based on the knowledge of your experiences.

The Barringer Publishing Satellite Office - Starbucks

Not only for Barringer Publishing but many small companies are conducting business from their friendly, local Starbucks. The neutral location of a neighborhood Starbucks, establishes a more relaxed and familiar site for a first meeting, and subsequent meetings as well. Over a latte, tea or espresso, many companies are utilizing the warm atmosphere of the neighborhood Starbucks as a comfortable, quiet meeting place. With various seating options, the meetings can take place indoors or outdoors, weather permitting. Typically a nice background selection of music is available, and the activity of customers coming in and out, creates an atmosphere that is not isolated, but part of the community. With the many Starbucks in our cities, it is always easy to find one that is located between the two parties, or one that is preferred by the customer which he, she or them is accustom to. Wifi presents another added reason why a meeting at Starbucks can work to every one's advantage. There is always a Starbucks within a short driving or walking distance to hold meetings, the perfect satellite office for companies based out of  a residence or a just preferred location.

Flexibility is the Key in Today's Publishing World.

The Publishing business seems to be changing every 10 minutes. A small independent publisher needs to be very flexible in today's market. One way to be flexible is with the printing of the books and sources available to all publishers. Some small independent publishers have the ability to purchase one book at a time or 50, or 500, or 5,000 and more if the situation calls for it. What this means is you print what you need. There is no need to warehouse books the way they were in the pre-digital days. The quality of the printing is as good or better than years ago and the efficiency of printing what you need is the most cost effective way to go, without the overhead of warehousing, etc. Also, there are printers that are fulfillment houses as well, so they can print and ship to the customer, one book, hundreds or thousands at a time, depending on the order. It gives publishers an advantage and option that just didn't exist years ago. Even publishers like the 500 year old Oxford University Press is using this printing option. If they were to warehouse their 35,000 titles, they said they would need a space the size of Texas. This saves the publisher millions of dollars in overhead and accounting costs. Of course the more books printed the higher the discount, just from one book printed to 50 books there is typically a 20-25% discount. This printing on demand method is being embraced by many small and even large publishing companies, that understand the value in printing what you need. Of course with a best seller from Dan Brown, this would not be the printing avenue to take, but for 95% of all published books, this seems to be the wave of the future.

Starting a New Independent Publishing Company

Starting a new company during a recession, almost depression, may not seem like the smartest idea. But when the demand for publishing new books demands your attention, the timing may be just right. Do people have more time to write? Are they hoping for the next bestseller to offset financial concerns? Are they just interested in getting a book published for vanity reasons? Do they want a book to sell at their speaking engagements? Whatever the reason, there are a lot of books out there, and quality books, with a voice that should be heard. I have received quite a few interesting manuscripts over the past few weeks, from rather unbelievable, but true, Vietnam War pages, novels, non-fiction, self help, historical fiction and children's books. The quality of the work and the dedication these authors have displayed, is quite remarkable. Most have daytime jobs so their writing time is limited, but they have lived with these books for years. It may have taken four years to complete, including research and writing, but it is time well spent. With a good story to tell, and writing skills that compare to any published book they deserve to be published. With fewer large publishing houses bringing out books each year, and a first time writer with little hope of being published, there should be a place, without self publishing, to allow them to share their work with the world. This is the role of the small independent publisher.
