The Publishing business seems to be changing every 10 minutes. A small independent publisher needs to be very flexible in today's market. One way to be flexible is with the printing of the books and sources available to all publishers. Some small independent publishers have the ability to purchase one book at a time or 50, or 500, or 5,000 and more if the situation calls for it. What this means is you print what you need. There is no need to warehouse books the way they were in the pre-digital days. The quality of the printing is as good or better than years ago and the efficiency of printing what you need is the most cost effective way to go, without the overhead of warehousing, etc. Also, there are printers that are fulfillment houses as well, so they can print and ship to the customer, one book, hundreds or thousands at a time, depending on the order. It gives publishers an advantage and option that just didn't exist years ago. Even publishers like the 500 year old Oxford University Press is using this printing option. If they were to warehouse their 35,000 titles, they said they would need a space the size of Texas. This saves the publisher millions of dollars in overhead and accounting costs. Of course the more books printed the higher the discount, just from one book printed to 50 books there is typically a 20-25% discount. This printing on demand method is being embraced by many small and even large publishing companies, that understand the value in printing what you need. Of course with a best seller from Dan Brown, this would not be the printing avenue to take, but for 95% of all published books, this seems to be the wave of the future.
