How important are reviews?
Everyone wants reassurance. When book shopping either online or at the books stores, how much weight does a review matter in the book buying decision? Evidently quite a lot. With a relatively unknown author or a first time author, a review can be very powerful. When we speak of reviews we obviously think of positive reviews. A bad review for a first time author can be devastating. For a more established author a bad review for one particular book is not earth shattering. An established author has a following and they will purchase the book and not be too concerned about the review.
The review source is also, and quite obviously very important. A New York Times, Boston Globe or Publisher's Weekly review is a big thing. There are many more big time review portals, and they do carry a lot of weight. Any good review is great. Whether its a small town newspaper or magazine, or one of the big ones. Authors should use the reviews in their marketing, no need to be shy here about tooting your horn. Utilizing, and quoting excerpts from the review can lead to sales. They should become a large part of your marketing efforts, whether it is online, direct mail, e-blasts, ads, and even business to business correspondence. A rave review line from the New York Times can go a long way to provide credibility to the author and readability for the book.
Barringer Publishing has launched two new exciting children's books by Dr. Molly Barrow. The reviews are coming in - "These are the kinds of books that parents and teachers as well as kids, have been seeking."
