When Should an Author Quit Doing Free Things to Generate Book Sales?

The answer...Never. That's the simple answer because there will always be free appearances that you will do. What you must do is to be able to discern which free appearances you can do without. How do you do that? One good way is to weigh the cost of the appearance with book sales. If experience tells you, and you have done enough of these appearances, and transportation costs more than the book sales you will garner, then forget those. Like a shark, keep moving forward. When you have found yourself stagnating, move on. Also appearances can pigeon hole you. Be sure to remain flexible, if you have appeared on the same program 10 times, and it is comfortable, it probably is time to branch out and use those 10 appearances as a stepping stone. Its always a balance. Is the cost of the appearance worth it. You may view the appearance as a stepping stone, to either acquire a good tape to send off for bigger shows, or to add to your web site, or other media appearances. The sales may not be that important. Sometimes the exposure is enough. Is the appearance always the best use of your time? If not, you could be wasting valuable time and opportunities. Appearances are great for many reasons. They provide recognition and are the best sales tool you will find. Does JK Rowling need to do any appearances...No, of course not. But JK Rowling and Dan Brown are the less than 1% who dont.
