Dr. Molly Barrow's new book, Malia & Teacup, Awesome African Adventure has just been given a glowing review from the Christian Children's Book Review. Described in the review as a "unique and empowering novel," the main character, Malia "learns positive character attributes like bravery, honesty, open-mindedness, and how to make friends." The review continues, calling the book a "fast-paced mystery... with quite complex characters...with an exciting climax." The only strong negative was from the Christian perspective regarding the grandmother who has died and while the grandfather is trying to preserve her body to bring her back to life, Malia does converse with the grandmother...or does she?
There are many positive comments and insights, including the mention of the back pages teaching the readers about Kenya, learning Swahili and being a "Salama" (Safe) kid. The illustrations got a rave review, as does the main character. Described as "an unusual protagonist...provides a stark contrast to the syrupy, always-sweet protagonists of many character building novels. At the same time, she is funny, likable and resilient, and we see her grow and change as a result of her adventures." The review's author sums up the excitement of the book this way, "I meant to put it down half a dozen times, but ended up reading until midnight in order to find out what happened."
