Mythbuster - Dr. Molly Barrow Says, "Stranger Danger Does Not Work."

Although the Stranger Danger program means well, Dr. Molly Barrow, author of the new children's must read, Malia & Teacup - Awesome African Adventure, believes the program falls short in many ways, and should not be relied upon as the solution to a huge problem. There are a number of reasons the program is outdated and just ineffective. 50% of child abuse and kidnapping is perpetrated by someone the child knows. Predators are not always strangers. They can be friends of the parents, relatives, members of a church, teachers or coaches. Telling children never to talk to strangers could actually do more harm than good. If they are seeking help and the only help available is a stranger, the mixed message can confuse the child and they will not seek the necessary help.

In Dr. Barrow's children's book, ages 9 and up, her main character, Malia learns through a series of exciting events that self esteem is the key to safety. Dr. Barrow has cleverly embedded self esteem building messages throughout her fun, adventure tale. She says, "Self esteem is the single most important factor in keeping children safe. It gives them the psychological armor they need and the empowerment to resist predators."
