On the surface, Dr. Molly Barrow's new book Malia & Teacup - Awesome African Adventure is a wonderful, exciting page turning tale of a young girl and her little teacup poodle. Through one misadventure after another they brave pirates, elephant stampedes, spies, wild animals and a host of unique characters. It is fun reading for ages 9 and up.
But, there is much more to this adventure than meets the eye. Dr. Barrow has embedded self esteem building messages throughout the book. The reader does not even realize these infused messages are there, but what they do is help build their self confidence and will in turn make them safer from bullies, predators and abuse. Self esteem is the single most important factor in a child's safety. Dr. Barrow is building psychological armor for our children.
People are getting it. They see the books as a unique teaching and guidance tool as well as a fantastic and fun read for children. It is the best of both worlds. They can enjoy the excitement of a good read and pick up a little something extra along the way. Just like Mary Poppins who administered medicine with a spoonful of sugar, Dr. Barrow administers psychology with a spoonful of reading.
